Calling for financial support for businesses negatively impacted by major municipal infrastructure construction
The Stony Plain Road Business Association is dedicated to supporting you and your business.
Partnering with the Canadian Federation of Independent Businesses (CFIB), SPRBA is actively advocating for financial support from the City of Edmonton for businesses impacted by municipal construction projects.
These challenges have been exacerbated by the Executive Committee’s recent decision to postpone voting on the draft policy. Intended to address financial losses during major construction projects, the delay has only left affected businesses in greater uncertainty.
The joint letter between SPRBA and CFIB urges Edmonton City Council and the Executive Committee to prioritize financial support for affected businesses:
“Over the past three years, 25 businesses in this area have been forced to close due to impacts from the construction, permanently harming the economic wellbeing of the community and the City as a whole.
“All taxpayers expect a return on investment when paying taxes; ensuring businesses in this area remain a viable part of the local economy is a beneficial use of funds for both these taxpayers and the City."
Ways you can get involved:
You are invited to express your support or opposition to this report at the City of Edmonton Council’s Executive Committee meeting on August 14, 2024 at 9:30 a.m.
- Contact Mayor Sohi and/or City Council. Phone your Councillor, write a letter, or fill out a request form to get in touch.
- Contact your City Councillor, especially if it’s not Councillor Knack, to express the importance of this issue to you and your vote. We need broader support. With 15 months until the next municipal election, politicians seeking reelection will want to clarify their stance on a number of issues, including this draft policy.
- Attend the Council/Committee meeting online or in-person at City Hall Council Chambers on August 14. Please note that you will have to go through a security screening at that time, so be sure to arrive a few minutes earlier. Having business owners present is a strong demonstration of our collective concern and your support.
- Voice your perspective as a business owner. Share your experience by registering to speak at the meeting:
