Meet Nadia: The heart behind CH Cafeteria’s chocolate and community

Celebrating women owned businesses on Stony Plain Road (on International Women’s Day and beyond)! Let's celebrate the incredible women entrepreneurs who help shape the vibrant Stony Plain Road business community. Their creativity and passion bring life to our neighbourhood every day.

One of those inspiring women is Nadia, owner of CH Cafeteria. Originally from Mexico, Nadia brought her love of chocolate, coffee, and community to Edmonton and turned it into a warm and welcoming cafe on Stony Plain Road. Today, she runs CH Cafeteria with her husband, creating a colourful space where neighbours can gather, enjoy delicious treats, and experience the blend of chocolate, coffee, and local art that makes the cafe so special. The cafe also carries so many wonderful handmade items (@yeg_mom_handmade and @yummymeselfcare to name a few!).

From house-made chocolates and ganache hot chocolate to beautifully crafted coffee drinks, CH Cafeteria has become a beloved neighbourhood spot and a reflection of Nadia’s passion for sharing culture and connection through food.

HERE'S OUR Q+A INTERVIEW WITH NADIA

Chocolate is at the heart of what you do. What makes your chocolate offerings unique?

It makes it unique because we choose the best ingredients and quality available, making great pairings and make it very approachable for everybody. We don´t use any artificial flavours or powders or syrups and we try to make all our products not too sweet, you can enjoy more the original flavours.

For someone visiting Ch. Cafeteria for the first time, what are a few must-try menu items?
Definitely for something savoury, try the Chilaquiles. One of my favourite dishes as they can be a breakfast, lunch, supper, snack... you name it!

For snowy days, try the Cafe de Olla, a traditional mexican style coffee, brewed and simmered with cinnamon sticks and raw sugar, itś like getting a hug on those cold days! Also popular on cold days is the Chaicolate and the Xocolatl.

Ch. Cafeteria is not only a cafe with a delicious menu, it’s a welcoming community space. What does creating that kind of atmosphere mean to you?

Oh! it is one of our main Core Values! when we started with this idea, we thought of bringing a safe space for the comunity, to go to a place where it feels cozy and where you feel you can have a break from the crazyness of the world.

We love the feeling of belonging to a comunity and being able to participate in the life of our customers and neighbours.

You’ve made space for local artists and handmade goods in the café. Why was that important to include?

I think we have all been in a place where you have a talent but you dont know where to show it. Sometimes we look out for that talent, but most of the times, our artists and vendors arrive on their own, looking for a place to show it. We think the colaboration between this two parts and the love and pride they put in their things is part of making our cafe beautiful. We help each other in this!

Ch. Cafeteria is also a venue for local events, what’s coming up this Spring and Summer that people can look forward to?

Slowly we discover more and more local events that need a venue and musicians that look for a place to do it. Stay tuned for what summer brings us!

What do you love most about being part of the Stony Plain Road community?

We love the sense of belonging. I love the idea of being a part of our customers day to day, share all the stories, watch their kids growing up, sharing good news, bad news or sometimes, just a place to get a smile or a quiet place to sit. It feels great to be part of this community.

What part of having a business brings you the most joy?

Giving somebody a taste of something that we made and watching their faces as they enjoy it! Also, our customers learning how to enjoy a good quality treat, when sometimes we are guilted into feeling bad when we have a treat.

Is there anything that has surprised you the most about running a small business?

Finding out how much work it is!! Totally worth it though.

If you could describe Ch. Cafeteria in three words, what would they be?

CHOCOLATE, COFFEE, OUTSIDE OF THE BOX (sorry, the last one is not a word, is more a concept)
