Get to Know Your Stony Plain Road: The Learning Centre Literacy Association
For this month’s ‘Get to Know Your Stony Plain Road,’ segment, we talked to Jayme, the Programs Coordinator at The Learning Centre Literacy Association! The Learning Centre started from humble beginnings in 1981 where it was just a small room in the Bissell Centre that offered tutoring help. However, thanks to partnerships with local organizations, such as Boyle Street Community Services and the YWCA, the Learning Centre became established within the nonprofit world as a reputable adult literacy organization.
Today, the Learning Centre is located in the Orange Hub with a mission to engage people in community-based learning and literacy development. The intention is to further enable people to make positive changes for themselves and their community – which is something that they see in their students every day. The Learning Centre’s overall vision is to create a vibrant and diverse community that explores and uses literacy with confidence.
“We are so fortunate to share a space with like-minded organizations that put their clients first,” states Jayme on the topic of staying involved with the community of Stony Plain Road, “We have great relationships with organizations such as FAVA, AdaptAbilities, Red Road Healing Society and Yellowhead Tribal College – just to name a few.”
